When we become overweight and obese it is normally down to us eating the wrong foods at the wrong times, this as we know leads to problems with your heart, kidneys and liver along with a host of other serious conditions. However there is one area that is often missed or forgotten when we are discussing weight problems, your teeth.

Periodontitis is a disease that affects the tissue around the teeth, the alveolar bone which if left untreated will mean the loss of your teeth. In a study carried out in America on over 13,000 people, it was noted that people in the 11-34 age group were most at risk by as much as 78% of getting periodontitis than people of a normal weight.

The study also found no significant difference between body weight and periodontits in older people, this may be due to several factors, such as younger peoples eating habits, they tend to eat less fresh fruit and vegetables which are a source of vitamin C and drink more soft drinks which will attack your teeth and ‘feed’ the disease.

This disease is treatable by following some simples oral hygiene techniques such as brushing your teeth on a regular basis, don’t drink soft drinks at night try to have a calcium rich drink and a good mouth wash.

“You are what you eat”, “cut down on the burgers, eat more fruit and veg”, that’s what my parents used to say to me. Lets be honest as kids did we ever listen to our parents, that was back many Moons ago. On a serious note the fatty tissue in overweight or obese people may produce more hormones and growth factors than people of healthy weight, and now many doctors and dieticians believe that eating the correct foods not only keeps your weight down but may also help in the prevention of many cancers, including mouth,
bowel, stomach and breast.

It is estimated that as many as 1-3 women and 1-2 men will develop some kind of cancer in their lifetime. As parents have to convince our own children to eat health or cancer will consume everyone’s life. That’s why is very important to encourage our children to eat healthy now.

Children follow by example, so if we start to eat more fruit and vegetables they will get into a habit of eating them, try them with raw carrot sticks and adding more vegetables into their favourite foods. Some other ideas are to make faces on their plates with food, make healthy eating into a game.

Get into the routine of going out for a walk in the evening again this will stop your children from getting lazy, research shows that taking regular exercise could help prevent as many as 3000 people from getting cancer each year.

Clothes starting to feel tight, feel as if we are eating too much and Summer just around the corner. So making the decision to go on a diet is not an easy one, we think about it for weeks before taking the first steps and tell the one closest to you, whether it be husband, wife or best mate, we are just looking for that little bit of encouragement. So what a ‘kick in the teeth’ when they all do the same thing, laugh, and say “you will never stick to it”.

All you are looking for is a little support, someone to help you when times get hard. You may feel like giving your diet up before you have had a chance to start. Don’t worry help is at hand, there are many good internet forum sites full of people experiencing the same problems as you.

Once by the registration stage you can post a question, or just chat to people about your diet, you never know they might have some recipes that you have never tried. Many of the forum sites will have information on weight loss as well as fitness equipment and all the latest products that are available to you. Forum sites are there to be used, wouldn’t it be worth a look rather than give up your diet?

What a great few days we have had, temperature hitting high 70s, Britain was the place to be this weekend, I for one was in a happy mood, the kids were up and playing happily (for once), we had organized a BBQ for family and friends. Saturday morning we were up early, cut the grass, cut the hedge, the women were busy preparing food and everything else, as we cleaned the swimming pool and got it filled.

Well as we all know Britain does not experience many hot days, so there is no need to keep the holiday clothes hung in the wardrobe, so it was a trip into the attic to find the ‘holiday’ case with all the clothes in. Like almost 10million people there was no way I was going to ‘squeeze’ into last years clothes.

Well for most of us this was an eye opener, but look on the bright side its not too late to shed those unwanted pounds. There are many diet pills, machines and slimming products on the market to help with weight loss, some of the diets are the Glycemic Index diet (GI), Atkins Diet, Zone Diet and Calorie Counting diets.

No matter what weight loss program you choose there are a few things you still have to remember, with the Summer comes the BBQ’s and drinking in the garden, we have to teach ourselves to eat and drink responsibly and before starting any weight loss program consult your doctor first. Obey these simple rules and soon you will be getting into your Summer clothes without any effort at all.

With 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 tendons, ligaments and muscles per foot its no wonder our feet feel the pressure when we put on a little weight. Our feet are the most used part of our body, an average person walks 115,000 miles that’s enough to walk round the world 4 times. There are many complaints associated with weight gain, our feet seem to be one part of our body that we all neglect.

As we put on weight, our feet feel the full brunt of all the extra pressure, so causing feet problems. These conditions are very painful and in many cases stop that person from walking. Many obese people are caught in a ‘no win’ cycle between their feet and weight loss, they have put so much pressure on their ankles, toes and heels that it is almost impossible to stand on them never mind do any exercise, so they get depressed and eat more food so the cycle begins again.

Many feet problems can be rectified by weight loss and non surgical procedures, here are a few of the major problems…

Swollen feet, this is the most common problem with obese and overweight people and may be a sign of arthritis or diabetes, you should speak to your doctor if this persists.

Spurs, another problem caused by being overweight, calcium builds up around the bones of the feet again this can be extremely painful.

Plantar Fasciitis, this is the fibrous band that stretches across the foot from toes to heel, this is what helps maintain the structure of the foot. In obese people this may be very painful for about 1 hr after getting up in the morning, or until it stretches or the swelling goes down on the feet.

In many cases a proper calorie controlled weight loss program and simple exercise (swimming and non moving cycle) will help keep your feet in working order.

Want to look great for the Summer, lose the ‘love handles’ or dump the ‘spare tyre’? Well there are several things that can be done to achieve this. Diets are a great way to lose weight but as we all know this takes a lot of will power, something that most of are not to good at keeping. There are many ‘aids’ on the market to aid weight loss, which are also very good when used alongside a controlled diet.

So how can we lose weight cheaply and efficiently? The best way is to eat less calories than your body actually needs, for women this has been estimated at 1940 and 2550 for men, although this can change according to your age, weight, height and lifestyle. A person that requires 2500 calories but eats only 2000 will lose 1lb a week. An average person will burn 30% of their calories by doing normal every day things, walking, cleaning hanging and hanging out the washing.

There are several other everyday exercises you can do to help in weight loss, wee all know that we will take the car to the shops, so park it in the furthest car parking space so you have to walk that little bit further, sitting at your computer move your legs, tap your feet, use the toilet upstairs, twist your bum these will all help burn extra calories.

Lastly, there is evidence to suggest that eating small amounts of food more frequently rather than having a large meal less frequently helps sustain your metabolism, this will also help with your food craven.

Ever started a diet then gave up after the first week, like the vast majority of people I have, why does this happen? You get ready for the diet ’starting on Monday’, on Sunday night you write down your meals for the week, calorie counting every meal making sure you don’t go over by even 0.5 calorie. You awake on Monday morning have your breakfast, doing well!! So you start to watch the clock “when’s my next meal?” How come when you do a diet you are always hungry? Well I am. Is it because I am on a diet or am I really hungry? Do you know that some foods actually make you feel hungry? There is some interesting facts about food that I didn’t know here are just a few.

1. Your sugary cereal breakfast will make you feel more hungry, as will your juice.

2. Will eating after 6pm, 8pm or even 10pm make me even fatter, not true, it is down to how much you eat during the day.

3. Celery and cabbage soup are reported to burn off calories, no food burns off calories, caffeine will speed up your metabolism (the way we burn off calories.)

4. Pasta will have the same effect as your cereal in the morning again making you hungry.

The best diets are the ones which are realistically achievable, try smaller portions instead of fad dieting this will help and as always self control!!

Do you know that around 24million pieces of clothing are sitting in woman’s wardrobes that don’t fit them? In a recent survey commissioned by Lloyds pharmacy women admitted to buying at leased three items of clothing that were too small for them in order to lose weight. Does it work or is just a waste of money?

Well for women, this is reported to have a small motivation value, as you want to get into that that little black dress or an expensive pair of jeans. Women in Scotland own the most ‘small sized’ garments while women in London own the fewest. As reported this only acts as an incentive to lose weight.

There are many products on the market to help you lose weight from machines, pills and shakes its up to you what one to use. If you are not sure about diet pills or shakes talk to your local doctor, there is one thing that is common to all weight loss programs, self control.

Fed up with that diet? what about the meal replacement program, these are foods that have a constant calorie count, normally in a bar, shake or powder, which can be mixed with water or milk. These convenient drinks or bars are great when you are in the office or at the gym. A diet meal replacement should usually provide your body with 1200 - 1600Kcal per day. They work by supplying your body with less calories than it actually requires thus using your fat stores. Taken twice a day normally one for breakfast then another for lunch then a calorie controlled meal at night. This then ‘trains’ your body into a proper eating structure.

The downside was originally the shakes were ‘chalky’ and bland to taste and the bars were like something from the bottom of a budgie cage, thus many people gave up very quickly. Nowadays much has changed as they are now very tasty and the shakes come in a number of delicious flavours, including chocolate, banana and strawberry.

So how does this diet replacement work? It has been suggested that part of the efficiency of the meal replacement approach may relate to the structured nature of the plan and again putting emphasis on regular eating. While you only have one main meal a day you learn to control your eating habits. This is very important to some people. There are a number of advantages of using diet meal replacement plan including, no complicated instructions to follow, nutritional and most of all you can have a normal meal at the end of the day. The disadvantages are lack of choice and some of the shakes can be expensive compared to the price of a normal meal.

Originally used for quick weight loss the body wrap has much more to offer. These modern day Body wraps are designed to hydrate and firm the skin, exfoliate dead skin and relax your muscles.(depending on what wrap you choose). Some say that body wraps will cause you to lose inches off your tum, thighs and arms, this is not specifically true, most weight loss is due to water loss.

Here are some of the body wraps that are available. Seaweed, this is an excellent natural herbal wrap, it is ideal if you want to detoxify and cleanse your skin, the body absorbs the natural minerals making your skin feel soft and rejuvenated. This treatment is the one to use if you want to tighten up some loose skin after childbirth or an intensive diet.

Chocolate, rose and mud these are all great for inch loss these are all infused with mud and minerals, ideal for rejuvenating the skin, the clay acts as a poultice and draws the toxins out of the skin, again inch loss may occur as this draws out water as well. It is advisable to drink plenty of water before your treatment to avoid dehydration. It is advisable to check with your doctor before booking one of these treatments if you have high blood pressure, diabetes or any heart conditions.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money going to the nearest spa as many of the treatments are available to buy over the counter. Once you have purchased your body wrap all you need is bin liners and enough hot water bottles to cover the area that you are treating, remember not to wash off the clay once your treatment has finished as the detoxification will still be working. If used properly these treatments will make you feel refreshed and feeling great.
